Marijuana in America
The White House has released a statement saying their open to changing marijuana laws from a Schedule 1 Offense. Attorney General Eric says any change has to come from the House of representative. This moved wouldn’t legalize marijuana use, by changing the classification of cannabis. This would make medical marijuana research easier to conduct. This would also give marijuana related businesses the ability to use federal tax deductions.
Currently a Schedule 1 drug is considered to have no medical benefits at all. Other schedule 1 drugs are LSD and Heroin. I think it’s safe to say these two drugs should be a Schedule 1 offense. Marijuana should not be in this category.
Classifying marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug stops universities and research facility from conducting test and experiments. Obama administration is taking a second look at this issue.
This move has some politicians still on the fence. Director of the Drug Policy Alliance Bill Piper think we should take marijuana off the list all together. Bill believe rescheduling marijuana is not the answer. To our failed and outdated policies.
My hopes for this re-scheduling is not to give government absolute control and regulation of marijuana. The best outcome from this move would be to open doors for more conversation and research regarding marijuana in America.
Americas views on marijuana has drastically shifted over the years. Three out of four Americans are ok with legalizing marijuana. The Pew Research Center survey shows that 75% of Americans believe legalization is rapidly approaching. Currently there are 20 states that support medical marijuana. Colorado and Washington were the first two states to legalize recreational use. Smoke and be Free
“Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit . . . unnatural?”
